8 Track History

In the year 1960’s an inventor named William Powell Lear invented the 8 track cartridge tape system. The 8 track history began when recording songs have been a good business for the music industry. Moreover, series of tests had been done to turn the threading tape into recorders. Lear’s invention was the first system in audio tape recording. He was also the inventor of the 4 track player. The difference between the two is that the 4 track player has a pinch roller that can cause the tape to tangle sometimes.

Lear’s refinement of such made him invent the 8 track player. The remaking or remodeling of it is to reduce the tangling of tape and also to help him patent his inventions. The other difference between the two is that the 4 track is divided into four channels, it comprises two stereo programs. The total playing time would be 40 minutes because there is only a limited length of the tape. 8 track history started when Lear divided it into two so it could have longer playing time.

While Lear is doubling the playing time, it also created a new problem. Both of the systems that he invented had a tape head that repositions itself along with the width of the tape in order to change its program. This means that a slight misalignment could create unnecessary types of sound. The good thing is that Lear found a way to fix it by widening it. The real reason behind this is that he refined it for market purposes also.

The 8 track was a big help for audio recording industry. Because of Lear’s invention, various artists had been successful in the music industry. The invention marked him as one of the greatest inventors in the making of 8 track history.
